Typical Laziness of a Friday

Friday is like the passageway from the typical stressful weekdays, to the enjoyable weekends, except for Sunday, it's the day where the following day is Monday so.. A bit of a moody day but still enjoyable. Friday is also a day where we are able to chill, relax and it's also a day when I am free to start on a couple of posts.

Every Friday on my way home from school, I tell myself that although it's Friday, I'm not going to spend the entire day slacking and I must be able to complete some homework. But that, never happens.

I don't know what Friday do to us, but it sort of makes us lazy. If you're still super hardworking on Fridays, I.. really admire your discipline. LOLS :P

I know that once I'm home, I'm gonna end up slacking all day, so what I normally do every Friday is stay back after school in the canteen and do some homework with my friends while waiting for their CCAs to start. We get released early on Friday anyway so I will have nothing to do if I go home too early.

JC OR Poly?

For those who study in Singapore, you will know that after the O levels, students will have to choose between two options, Junior College or Polytechnic.

In case you are foreign to these terms, let me just summarise each of them. In Junior College, you will take a 2-year course for your A levels, that is used for admission to the University.

In Poly, you will take a 3-year course for your DIPLOMA. There are lots of courses in fields such as Engineering, Applied sciences, Business, etc.

OR

This issue about JC and Poly is debatable, some think that JC is better as majority of JC students will get into university, while in Poly, you have to be one of the top. Some think that Poly is better as the skills learnt can be used in the real world and that A levels will be useless if you can't get into a university. There's a mix of opinions in the public and it's good to have many different people thinking in different ways actually.

In my opinion, both JC and Poly has their own advantages and disadvantages. It really depends on the person's opinion. In my group of friends, there are some who want to go to JC, and some who want to go to Poly. But poly is gaining more popularity nowadays and most of my friends actually want to go to Poly to pursue the courses of their choice, that includes me.

So let's analyse this further and take a look at the general differences between the two:

1) Entry to University

Who doesn't want to get a degree? With many degree holders nowadays, you will sort of lose out if you do not have one.

As mentioned, A level holders are prioritised in University admissions. About 90% of JC students will go on to University. As for diploma holders, only the top 20% or so will be able to get into a University.

But here's the catch, if a JC student can't get into a University, his/her A level qualification is USELESS. He/she can then go to Poly with the A levels but that's a waste of 2 years of his/her life.

With a Diploma, even if you can't get into a university after graduation, you can find a job and work before furthering your studies in the University using at least 3 years of working experience.

Of course, University graduates get higher starting pays than diploma holders and have more opportunities, but that's another story so not gonna really touch on that.

2) Subjects Learnt

In JC, you will still be learning general subjects such as Maths, Science, Literature, Etc.
But in Polytechnic, the subjects learnt are those related to your course/field.

Also, in JC, the subjects are for your A levels only while in Poly, the skills and knowledge learnt can be used in the real world.

But in my opinion, if you are interested in studying general subjects in Uni, such as History, Literature, Mathematics, it is better to go to JC. Because JC will give you a strong foundation in those kinds of subjects.

3) Experiences you get

In my opinion, If you want a more enriching experience, you should go to Poly. Because the courses in Poly will give you a real hands on experience on the field that you are learning. Not to mention, the attachment programmes prepares you for working in the real world. You will be exposed to the world more.

For JC, it's mostly hardcore studying for A levels.

In conclusion, it is really up to you to choose the one that you think is more suitable and beneficial to you.

I think that If you already know what you want to do, Poly will be a more encouraged path as Poly will give you a real hands on experience and also give you a better foundation in the field before you go on to further your studies in University. With passion in the course, I'm sure you will do well. However if you are still pondering on what you want to do or you think JC is a safer path, then by all means, go to JC.

P.S you have to work hard in both JC and Poly, and both are not easy to get in, so.. Just pick your path wisely and not based on which is easier.

" No assault on bus captain "

I was on the bus the other day and It was a long journey so i decided to look at some of the posters that were put up and I came across a sign that says, " No assault on bus captain. "

Seriously? No assault on bus captain? Why do they need to put that up? Isn't it common sense that it is wrong to assault/ attack someone?! -__-
I'm sure many of you have also noticed that sign, and you might be as puzzled as I am.

I really don't understand why we need a sign to remind us that it is wrong to assault someone. It's an act of violence so it is naturally wrong.

I know that there had been cases in the past whereby people actually attacked the bus captain for one reason or another, but by putting that sign on our buses, what does that reflects on us? If foreigners or tourists were to see that, what impression will they have on us? Will they think that we are a bunch of barbarians who resolve problems with violence?

I'm not hating on the advertisers who put that up, I am just puzzled and bewildered by a sign that tells us the obvious. But I guess if we really need that sign to remind us about the assaults on bus captains in the past and that it is wrong, then I have no comments about it ._.

The Beautiful You

I was watching this episode of Smosh on Youtube and it made me think about something that I'm sure most or all of us have felt or experienced before, being insecure about the way we look and how people will think about it. ( I suggest you watch the video before reading this... )

This is especially true among teenagers, when we are in our growing years and we start to realise that the society we live in is judgmental, and that even the way we look can have either a positive or negative impact on the impression that we give others.

So we will start finding out different hair styles, hair products, make ups ( for the girls ), etc. and it is actually pretty normal, I mean, who doesn't want to look good? Looking good is good for your self esteem and confidence.

But nobody's perfect, everyone has flaws, you may try to enhance or cover it by make up, photoshop, whatever, but the flaw will always be there, It won't go away, unless you go for plastic surgery but that's not recommended.

Everyone is beautiful and good looking in their own way, the key to looking good is to be yourself and to look your best, and also being confident to say, Is this me? Yes, this is me and no one can replace me, NO ONE. Not even my clone... ( If scientists decide to clone humans someday ._. )

No one can replace the beautiful you.

You're beautiful in your own way. Now smile :)

Peer Pressure

I've been wanting to do a post on peer pressure for a very very long time and finally, here I am making it ( I dunno if this info is necessary :3 )

Anyway, what is peer pressure? Well, in my own definition, peer pressure is, as the name suggests, the pressure to do something that your peers ask you to do.

Some people say that peer pressure is " retarded " and that we should just ditch that sh** and be ourselves, but let's face it, everyone has been affected by peer pressure in one way or another, because it's everywhere, and it's rather unavoidable.

I have noticed, from life experiences, that different group of friends have their own types of peer pressure. Every group has something which the members generally like and don not like to do, their own meeting place, etc. etc.

There are two kinds of peer pressure, the positive and negative peer pressure. That's the easiest way to classify the two, haha.

Like I've said, peer pressure is rather unavoidable. What we can do though, is choose the right people to give us the right types of peer pressure. A.K.A Choose your company and friends wisely.

Choose those friends who will help and benefit you in positive ways, for example, a group that has members who are hardworking and are working towards something and will motivate and inspire you. If that's a little too nerdy, why not a group who likes to work out, play sports and exercise? You will also benefit when you become fitter, healthier and of course, more muscular ^^

Also, choose the friends who are willing to accept you for who you are, and that you don't have to be exactly like them to appear cool.

Next, the negative peer pressure. This type of peer pressure is somewhat the hardest to avoid and get away from. I don't know why, but bad things are always harder to avoid, like fast food for example. Yum Yum x)

How do you deal with peer pressure whereby you're asked to do drugs, smoke, or do bad and illegal things? Well, let me teach you one trick, and that's to say NO.

If someone tells you to have sex or drink underage, or to steal things from the local store, why would you want to do it?

It's like someone offering you a ticket to jail, just take it and you can have instant excess to the small room that's enclosed behind a bunch of metal bars.

If your reason for doing it is to appear " cool " in front of your friends, then you are wrong. You are only harming yourself. Many people can advice you not to do it, but ultimately the choice is yours. But remember, actions have consequences.

Most of the time though, the group which has negative peer pressure is the one that appears the coolest, but why do we need to be in that sort of group to appear cool?

There are many groups with positive peer pressure that are cool too, and their coolness is not defined by stealing or doing drugs, but by doing what's right and beneficial to the members and have positive outcomes in the end.

Peer pressure is like a sea. You either choose the one that is safe and brings your boat towards your destination or the one that may appear to be fun, having thunderstorm and stuff, but in the end, the outcome may not be that desirable.

Let's wrap up this post by a video by Andysunstory. Andy Sun is an Australian Vlogger and he talks about pretty cool stuff on Youtube, so you may want to check him out if you want. I'm not pressuring you by the way ^^

Self Motivation

Back in Primary school, my parents used to tell me ( and still do sometimes ) that if I do well in school, I can have a good job, a bright future, etc. and the school told us that if we do well, we can go to the good secondary school that we desire to go to.

Being an obedient child ( most, of the time :p ), I studied hard for my exams and of course the PSLE. But all these importance and going to a good school in the future did not really motivate me at all.  It pushes me to do well but it was something that my parents and society want, and not what I wanted for my own.

What I'm trying to say is that, self motivation is important. It is important to find something that you want in your life, that you wish to pursue, that you wish to do for life and what you want for YOURSELF.

People around you can encourage you, motivate you, tell you the rationale behind what you are doing, but ultimately it's you who is really motivating yourself.

So I find it sad when children's life are being structured and planned by their parents, and I know that parents are more matured, want the best for them and that they need to be guided, but just forcing them to lead a life that only their parents like and have made for them, without negotiating whether they like it or not, considering their feelings on the decision or whether is it beneficial to them, is really mean.

Often, these kids will ask themselves, " What am I working hard for? " because they do not have their own self motivation and may have low self esteem. People around them are planning their own life, but they feel that they are left in the dust, having to lead a planned and restricted life, and not making their own journey. They have to follow a path, whether they like it or not. There's no other choice.

I have a friend whose parents are like that. He is forced to take up accountancy in the future no matter what. But seriously, what's the deal with accountancy? Is accounting the best job on earth? No. Will accounting guarantee that you will make more money than everybody in this world? Again, NO.

I think it is better to let kids find their own drives.

I am not saying that you shouldn't listen to your parents advice because sometimes, they may know better than you, and I am not against parents telling their children as to why the path they choose is not really beneficial, but please know the difference between " advising " and " dictating ".

In a nutshell, Listen to your heart. You plan your life. You decide what's best for you. Self motivation is called " self " motivation for a reason.

Reasons To Eat

During the caveman period, the reason why people hunt for food was simple, it was because they need food to survive. But take a look at the present time, humans have become more creative and innovative over the years that we now have so many reasons to eat other than to " survive ".

Here are some of the reasons why we eat that i have thought of ( except for surviving ) :

1) To celebrate

Be it to celebrate someone's birthday, wedding anniversary, father's day, mother's day, and a hundred over events, we all love to organise a gathering to eat and celebrate those occasions.

2) To discover

Imagine if there's a new ice cream shop open in your local Mall. Many people have been talking about how tasty the ice cream is, how it melts in your mouth once its molecules get heated by your breath inside and they spread apart, sliding over each other, and how the feeling of the melted cream in your mouth is simply, awesome.

Of course, like most people who love food, including me, you may want to try and discover if the ice cream is really as nice as people say. If it's not, then well, at least you discover something that tastes like shit, right? XD

3) To enjoy

How many times have you bought food to eat not because of hunger, but because you are craving for it as its taste can never leave your taste buds?

That question pretty much sums up " To Enjoy ".

4) There's nothing to do

Why do some or most people gain weight after holidays? Because they are so bored that they resort to going to their fridge and keep on eating.

I'm not saying that we have no life, but there are those days whereby people have no outing plans or they are out of cash, so they have to stay at home and rot.

5) To compete

If you have ever watched shows whereby people compete with each other to see who finishes the food first, you will know that it's epic.

It is to test whether you are able to perservere and keep on eating even though your stomach is saying, " NO, NO. NO MORE, PLEASE D; "

Man, I would love to compete in one of those eating competitions if given the opportunity. But most likely I would throw up :3
