Chinese Should learn CL? ( Bilingualism )

I often hear many teachers, parents and people from the older generations say, " You are a Chinese, how can you not know how to speak CL properly? That's really embarrassing. It is your roots, blah blah blah... "

In case some of you do not know what CL is, it stands for Chinese Language.

I study in a Secondary school in Singapore and like any other students, I have to study two languages, English and my Mother Tongue, which is Chinese.

And many teenagers in this generation are very westernised and therefore are not really well-versed in our Chinese. I'm not saying all of us but a good number of us would prefer English to Chinese.

Teachers have been telling us the importance of learning and mastering our Mother Tongue and to be able to speak Chinese, LIKE A CHINESE.

Personally for me, the reason why I do not ditch Chinese is because I feel that it is always good to be bilingual ( Or better still, multilingual ) and able to speak in more than a language.

Because being bilingual is like a skill. If you know how to communicate with different types of people and speak more than a language, you have an advantage over people who only speak a language, be it at work, when travelling, making friends, etc.

It will also help you to appreciate different cultures because trust me, every language has its own poetic beauty.

I think that the thinking of " Chinese should speak Chinese ", is outdated and old-fashioned. There are many different types of Chinese in this world right now. There are American-Chinese, Indonesian-Chinese, etc. And they all have been influenced by different cultures and so naturally they are gonna integrate.

Overall, must Chinese learn CL? Well, my answer is that, the more languages you master, the better. However, English is still the main language that I use because, I don't know, I just feel more comfortable with it. Moreover most of my subjects are in English so...

Here's a video that I'm sure most of you can relate to. HAHA.
PS I'm NOT this guy.
