Biology's AEM ( Day 3-5 )

I know I didn't blog about day 3, 4 and 5 of AEM. That was because i was really busy, preparing for today's presentation and powerpoint, chasing my group mates for their research work, studying for the test, etc. I mean, this course isn't all fun and games you know.

Biology's AEM ( Day 2) : http://hansyhp.blogspot.sg/2013/06/biologys-aem-day-2.html

So I decided to put the 3 days together into one post.

Day 3

Day 3's lecture was about inorganic poison such as Mercury, Lead, Thalium, their uses and how it affects the human body. Again, the lecture was as heavy as day 2 and it was continuously heavy till day 4. Also, throughout the course of this lecture, my friends and I have learnt how to be a perfect murderer hahahahah ^^ ( I'm kidding, we can't challenge science and the law... )

Day 3's practical was to test for the percentage of aspirin ( A painkiller ) in a tablet. We were supposed to use the Titration method for this practical and everyone found it really fun and my friends keep on talking about it even till now. HAHA.

Day 4

Day 4 ( Yesterday ) was the last day of the lectures and the practical, which was sad. In just a blink of an eye, the course was coming to an end.

Anyway, day 4's lectures was something that I have been waiting for, we were finally learning about forensics itself.

Unexpectedly, we learnt about the law! Well actually that was pretty expected as Forensic scientists work closely with the police force. We learnt about the two types of laws, criminal and civil and how the judge is guided in court. We learnt Chain of Custody, how to indentify evidences and forensic chemistry.

The last practical was to test the concentration of metal ions in different volumes of iron solution using the spectrometric technique. Again, with the use of a machine. I can go on and on and on about how great technology is man... ( oh shit... I didn't take a photo of the machine O.O ) It's a machine whereby we put the solutions in and the detector will detect the concentration of metal ions.

Day 5 ( Today )

Today was a short day. That's expected since today was the last day.

I was quite reluctant to end this course actually, i wish the course would extend to next week or start all over again, but everything has a start and an end so, I'll take what I can get.

There was no lecture today, instead, we did an activity to measure our friends' physical features and these are: Height, seating height, length of outstretched arm from one index fingertip to the other, Length of outstretched arm from shoulder to the index fingertip, length of lower arm from elbow to wrist, length of right ear, length of head from front to back and the circumference of the head.

Okay, so we did a bit of lecture today about Anthropometric, which is the study of human body measurements. We also learnt how forensic scientists actually identify the person by his/her biological, chemical and physical characteristic.

After breakfast, we did the 1 hour test. The questions were pretty easy, straight-forward, short answers and fill in the blanks. I did not know how to do 2 questions though, either I didn't study those parts or I have forgotten about it, but it was most likely that I didn't study those parts. Regrets.....

After the test, we did a survey before starting the presentation of our case study. You think that it was just a written survey where we just tick, tick, tick...? NO. There was also verbal survey. We had to tell the entire class what we learnt during the course...

So i told the class that the course has made me become more interested in Chemistry, which is true. I used to hate chem. Why do they make chem compulsary anyway? It don't make sense man.

The presentation went well, which is good :) I was nervous at first but as I started talking I felt quite okay. I just felt like having a conversation with people. If you do not know what this is about, please start reading from day 1. Thank you ^^ Catch up the earlier episodes man...

Overall, this course was awesome ^^ It has not only exposed me to forensic sciences but it was also a good and meaningful way to spend a week of my June holidays.

I left the Polytechnic with a heavy heart, but like I said, everything has a start and an end so.. yea.
